BEHIND THE MUSES

FLORENCE WELCH & FRIDA GIANNINI
From the moment her debut album came out in 2009, Welch, the flame-haired frontwoman of the British pop band Florence and the Machine, bewitched the fashion world. Soaring vocals aside, the statuesque performer cut a striking figure in her dramatic, boho-chic frocks, and it wasn’t long before designers were fighting to dress her in their own. “I was captivated by her eccentric style and her willingness to dare,” says Giannini, Gucci’s creative director, who designed Welch’s costumes for her current tour—and also took inspiration from her for the label’s fall 2011 collection. “She embodies the cinematic allure and seductive power that is its essence.”

EXCLUSIVE: Gucci Dresses Florence Welch on Her Summer Tour

The dog days of summer are just beginning — and that means Florence Welch’s tour is about to start, too! Beginning tomorrow, the songstress — the driving force behind Florence + the Machine — will bring her sweet vocals to cities from Berkeley to Boston, and she’ll be doing so in style. Gucci tells PEOPLE exclusively that creative director Frida Giannini designed Welch’s tour wardrobe, which consists of ethereal gowns accented with whimsical touches. “When Florence first came onto the scene, I was captivated by her eccentric style and her willingness to dare,” Giannini says in a release. “I felt there was such an authentic energy to her sound and her look. That was confirmed when I met her at the Grammys earlier this year.” The designer admits that the singer inspired her autumn/winter 2011 collection — and she even set her show to one of Welch’s songs, “Hurricane Drunk.” “[She's] a modern day icon with her cinematic allure and powerful presence,” Giannini adds. For her part, Welch is understandably flattered. “I was completely bowled over by her collection,” she says. “The dresses seemed perfect for my shows, the colours, the shapes, the movement in the fabric. So it seemed natural that we work together on creating some pieces for my upcoming U.S. tour.” When Welch takes the stage at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tenn., on Friday, she’ll be draped in some of Giannini’s designs, including a swirling dotted gown, seen in the exclusive sketch on the left, and a sexier, floral-bedecked number (right). Welch enthuses, “I’m very grateful to Frida, it’s been a wonderful experience and I can’t wait to get dressed for the stage!” Tell us: What do you think of Welch’s Gucci costumes? –Kate Hogan

Gucci to design Florence Welch’s wardrobe for her upcoming tour

Recently named as the new face of Gucci, Florence and the Machine frontwoman Florence Welch will be dressed by the luxe label for her upcoming tour of North America…

Designer/artist tour wardrobe collaborations are nothing new – think Kylie and designer duo Dolce & Gabbana – but with the news that iconic Italian fashion house Gucci have been working with ethereal beauty Florence Welch on a selection of outfits for Florence and the Machine’s upcoming American tour with U2, we’re dying to get a front row ticket.
Having already revealed that Florence was the inspiration behind her Fall 2011 collection and is set to star in the campaign, Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini explained that it was the stunning songstress’ “eccentric style and willingness to dare” that she first found captivating.

A fan of fashion, and obviously thrilled by the collaboration, Florence enthused: “I was completely bowled over by her [Autumn/Winter 2011] collection, the dresses seemed perfect for my shows, the colours, the shapes, the movement in the fabric. So it seemed natural that we work together on creating some pieces for my upcoming US tour. I'm very grateful to Frida, it's been a wonderful experience and I can't wait to get dressed for the stage!”

With the tour spanning 17 cities and starting in Manchester, Tennessee tomorrow, we can’t wait to see the photos!

Gucci's New Muse

BY ELLA ALEXANDER 06 June 2011

FRIDA GIANNINI has described Florence Welch as her inspiration for Gucci's autumn/winter 2011 offering.
"As I was imagining this collection I was thinking of a strong and somewhat mysterious muse. Florence is that kind of woman," she explained. "I met her in Los Angeles at this year's Grammys and was captivated by her presence. She has a powerful personality and an entrancing quality to her performances. She also has that confident and self assured look that goes hand in hand with the Gucci woman."
Having picked Mark Ronson, Rihanna and James Franco to appear in previous Gucci campaigns, Giannini believes she has an eye for emerging talent.
"I chose to work with all three of them before they became as popular culturally as they are today," she told Dazed Digital. "I think Gucci has been successful in bridging past and present. We have a rich and storied past, but we always have an eye to the future, which these collaborations represent."
