The Gang Gang Dance/Florence and the Machine Connection

Take a listen to the very beginning of Florence and the Machine's song "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)". Now listen to Gang Gang Dance's "House Jam" at about the one minute mark.

Sound similar? Gang Gang Dance sure think so. So much so, in fact, that they pursued Florence's team to give them a share of the song's publishing royalties-- and Florence agreed, saying it was a mistake not to have credited them in the first place.

You won't find Gang Gang Dance listed in the liner notes for the song's single or for Florence's album Lungs, though. The song was released without Gang Gang Dance's knowledge. It wasn't until the band saw the "Rabbit Heart" video and noticed the similarity themselves that they took action. When the issue was brought to Florence's label's attention, "They did acknowledge the infringement and said that they were aware of it," according to Warp, Gang Gang Dance's publisher.

Florence's camp claims it was a mistake that Gang Gang Dance's credit was left off of the first run of albums. Florence herself says, "Yeah that's true, it's no secret. I've spoken about it in interviews before. I'm a massive fan of Gang Gang Dance and it was in homage to them."

source

Now, Gang Gang Dance are set to make money off of "Rabbit Heart". And with Florence and the Machine's profile rising every day (Lungs recently topped the UK album chart and won the BRIT Award for British Album of the Year), that could be quite a payoff.

The Dirty Disco cover Florence and The Machine

They are glamorous. They are sleazy. They are pop. “Imagine… the lust child of Ziggy Stardust and Britney Spears”. They are The Dirty Disco.

In an interview I did with Olly last year he told me “we began writing songs together with an aim to be different, outrageous but without being too extreme. We quickly found we had an ability to write catchy songs without being too cheesy yet retaining a rock and electronic edge.” And that’s exactly what they do and they do it well.

Take Florence and The Machine’s “soul inspired indie” and mix it with “an unhealthy dose of glam” and you’ll have The Dirty Disco’s cover of Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up). I love it. You will too.

They are currently hard at work on their debut album, which will include mixes by the uber talented Grammy nominee Dylan Dresdow (who worked with the Black Eyed Peas on their latest album). Expect the dance floor to be filled with their beats very soon.

Are you ready for The Dirty Disco?

Dog Days Are Over

In Studio Podcast: Florence and the Machine

Florence and the Machine have had a very good year.

The band, which sprouted off the bedroom recordings of British singer Florence Welsh, won an award – The Brits Critics' Choice Selection – for their debut album, Lungs, before it was even released. When it was released, in July of 2009, sales of Lungs were brisk in Britain, second on the charts only to Michael Jackson in the wake of his death. And the acclaim continued, landing Welsh and her bandmates on the shortlist for Britain's top critical music award, the Mercury Music Prize.

On a recent tour stop in Toronto, Florence Welsh stopped by the Post for a chat with Brad Frenette and to perform a pair of songs: Rabbit Heart and Kiss With A Fist.
