Florence And The Machine frontwoman backed to appear in Doctor Who

Florence And The Machine singer Florence Welch has been backed to make an appearance in Doctor Who by the series' lead actor Matt Smith

The TV star recently admitted that he would love to see the flame haired frontwoman make a cameo in the sci-fi series one day.

Asked whom he would like to see make an appearance, Smith said: "Florence from Florence And The Machine - I'd quite like her to do one."

The Doctor is accompanied across time by flame-haired assistant Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan in the actual series.

He also said he would like former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona to make an appearance in the show at some stage, reports the Press Association.

You've Got The Love NME Acoustic Session

Florence To Play Intimate London Gig

Florence is set to play a very special gig in London next month as aprt of the NME Calling series of shows.

She will appear at The Tabernacle venue along with some very special guests for the show that takes place on Novemver 27.

Why Flo Loves Billie Holiday

The new issue of NME is dedicated to lost musical legends.

Billie Holiday actually pre-dates a lot of other artists in my life. When I was much younger – eleven, twelve - I was listening to Billie Holiday records in my room on my own, with a wineglass full of orange juice, already pretending to be a sort of tortured mistress of blues, wafting around my bedroom. Songs like 'Strange Fruit' – just incredible.



And her whole life story. I mean, she was a prostitute. And then she was part of the whole Harlem renaissance – so many amazing things came out of that.

Her voice was just incredible. Her whole manner of perfoming was very restrained. So cool. Completely the antithesis of Janis Joplin, but had that same thing – the emotion she was able to create through singing.

She had these dogs – and in the balls in their collars, she'd keep her heroin. She was in trouble with the police loads. Even on her deathbed, they raided her for drugs offences.

She's got this biography called 'Lady Sings The Blues' – it's co-written by her, but she just glosses over the whole heroin addiction thing, like it never happened. The warts-and-all biography just wasn't done in those days.

But really it's the voice. It's that ability to touch someone. That's what makes her an icon, not the tragedy of her death.

Florence at Leeds Review

orence And The Machine and Friendly Fires brought a carnival atmosphere to the Leeds Festival today (August 30) as they both played sets on the NME/Radio 1 Stage.

Barclaycard Mercury Prize-nominated singer Florence Welch, who celebrated her birthday at Reading Festival on Friday (August 28), carried on the party at Bramham Park when a fan in the crowd handed her a card.

"Is that a card you're handing me there?" she asked before single 'Kiss With A Fist'. "Thank you so much."

Welch, who performed with a taped-up hand, revealed to the crowd that she had had an accident at Reading.

"By the way, this isn't a fashion cuff," she said. "I really fucked my hand up at Reading, my hand was pissing blood all the way from my dressing room on my birthday."

She then kicked off a call-and-response as she got both sides of the crowd to howl, fittingly, before 'Howl'.

Later, the stage crew had to hand her drummer an anorak after rain started to pour into the tent. "I've just had a shower of rain fall on me, this is so cool," she giggled. "Our drummer needs an umbrella."

She went on to perform single 'Dog Days Are Over', while the crowd sang every word to her cover of Candi Staton's 'You Got The Love.

She was about to perform 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)' before she ran out of time, forcing her to apologise to her fans.

Later, fellow Barclaycard Mercury Prize nominees Friendly Fires reeled off tracks from their self-titled debut in the same tent, including 'Jump In The Pool', 'Paris' and 'Skeleton Boy'.

The St Albans band also performed their forthcoming single 'Kiss Of Life' during their lively set.

Florence wowed an absolutely huge Reading festival crowd at the weekend and footage of the set is now online for your viewing pleasure.
The performance on the NME/Radio 1 stage saw fans spilling out of the tent as they surged in to see one of the highlights of the festival.
