Inside Out London: Making The Harp Hip

The harp's image has always been seen as somewhat regal. However, all that is changing and the time has come for the harp to be hip.
In the past the instrument tended to be associated with classical concerts, folk music or musicians playing at weddings, eisteddfods and on cruise ship liners.
This most ancient of instruments is now going through a rock and roll renaissance as illustrated by artists such as Joanna Newsom, Dizzee Rascal and Florence and the Machine.
Tom Moth is Florence and the Machine's harpist and he is happy that the harp's image is changing.
"People have still got this very fixed impression of what the harp is and what it is used for. And it would be nice if hopefully at some point people come to accept it in other forms of music.
"I don't see any reason why harps shouldn't be accepted in that scenario anymore than guitars. It's not the instrument, it's how you play it."
The harp is also a big part of Lucinda Belle's life. She started playing when she was six and has developed a life-long passion for the instrument.
Lucinda said, "It's so important that we keep this alive."

South-London based collective fronted by harpist & songwriter, Tom Moth, who is currently more frequently seen playing harp for Florence and the Machine.
Tom had previously been performing as part of the band Tearso but went into self-imposed exile after the bands demise. Following two self-released albums (Mothmusic Vol.1 - 2000 & Scar Diaries - 2001), Lunamoth's first single, "Squirrels...Yeah!" was released through Big Square records in Summer 2003 and was described by IDJ magazine as "frankly bizarre, but utterly ace". "Squirrels..." was later re-mixed by Future Funk Squad. At the same time, Lunamoth were writing and performing music for theatre and film productions around London.
Tom has been seen working with various artists and bands including Eva Eden, Paul Mosley, The Dave Browns, Revere, contributing to a couple of tracks on Cicero Buck's album "Delicate Shades Of Gray".
Lunamoth's cover version of Bjork's "Army Of Me" was chosen by Bjork herself to be featured on a charity compilation of covers and re-mixes of that particular song, with all proceeds going to UNICEF ("Army Of Me" the album is available through One Little Indian records).
In 2006, Lunamoth completed a semi-improvised mini album (mainly recorded on location in Germany on a palmtop 4 track) and composed the music for the Spare Parts Theatre Company production "Better".
A new album is being recorded in spare moments between FATM gigs, so it's a bit of a slow process.
