ACX 2010 Florence and the Machine Brings Visionary Magic To KROQ Stage

Come to the magical, mystical winter wonderland that is Florence and the Machine at 21st Annual KROQ Acoustic Christmas. The British indie-rock pixie and lyrical dreamweaver took the main-stage, slinking on the stage wearing a white chiffon dress and moving with an ethereal grace and a sublime air of visceral power.
Florence Welch is a woman of her word; she fuses her theatrical, intoxicating lyrics with her life story seamlessly. When you watch Welch, you are swept up in her personal struggles and her profoundly meaningful triumphs.

Florence and the Machine’s critically acclaimed 2009 album, Lungs, is one of our favorite records to date. Florence Welch’s songwriting style lends well to the feminine psyche; she perceives womanly longing, heartbreak, and tongue-in-cheek whimsy with fresh–and ofttimes experimental–insight.

Welch looked like a Christmas angel on top of the tree and one of our other writers stated, “I think she deserves to be on top of the tree.” She is definitely one of the most powerful female vocalists in existence–if not the best female vocalist of our time.

Welch sang “Cosmic Love,” conducting the air sprites with her drumstick; she leaned back with her eyes closed, almost offering her soul to the goddesses. She pounded on her drum while she sang “Girl With One Eye,” enticing the crowd into an orgiastic chant. Accompanying Welch was her “machine,” including a keyboardist dressed in a black velvet gown and a gorgeous golden harp.

Ending her set with her hit single “Dog Days Are Over,” Welch belted operatically, showing off her undoubted vocal prowess. Stepping out of her angelic trance, she grinned and led the the KROQ audience into special Christmas dance. As she bounced up, her diaphanous white dress flew up in the wind around her.
And for a moment, we almost thought Florence Welch could fly.

ACX 2010 Florence and the Machine Shows Off her Shoes and Lipstick Backstage

Florence Welch of Florence And The Machine generously fit time in her hectic schedule (she literally walked off the plane and came straight to venue, missing her initial interview time slot) for KROQ’s joq Stryker to interview her in her dressing room last night. Which meant, amongst other things, we got a sneak-peek at her enviable wardrobe.

With Stryker on her right, the red-haired chanteuse sat right next to her exploding suitcase, jammed full of impressive garments, including the billowy chiffon number she floated around in on stage tonight and fancy footwear, and showed us some highlights. Our biggest crush? Her Gold studded Louboutins that would make any fashionista blush/cream/smolder.

Other fun beauty secret from backstage? Florence collects lipsticks at the airport, “little luxuries that keep you going.” (Stryker was so mesmerized, he even tried some on.) While she’s ethereal onstage, with her angelic voice and soul-lifting song writing, off stage Florence is down to earth, modest, and unabashedly girlie off stage. It’s a delightful combination.

As for news (thank god we were able to pay attention while salivating at those studded heels): What has Florence and The Machine been up to? Ms. Welch recently performed at the Nobel Piece Prize Concert, along with Elvis Costello and other musicians. Her set, consisting of a 60-piece orchestra and 20 strong choir, “made me want to do orchestral gigs in the future.” Mark your calendars and wear your best shoes for that one, folks.

Letter From LA

Watch the video here!

Tabitha Denholm's "Florence: Letter from LA" is a sunny meditation on pop stardom, premiering exclusively on NOWNESS today. It captures Welch during her fall 2010 American tour for her debut album Lungs (which earned her a Best New Artist Grammy nomination). We see the flame-haired British songstress swimming in pools, driving on highways and marveling at the surreal nature of fame and the places it has brought her. "I wanted to record this unique time in Florence's career because I knew it would be a one-off," explains Denholm, who co-directed several of Welch’s early music videos with Tom Beard, notably for the single “Rabbit Heart.” This new short film is one in a three-part series collectively titled Letters From America, which also trails Welch to New Orleans and New York. "Florence has this energetic whirlwind side, and then this incredibly quiet introspective side," Denholm reveals. Welch says she decompressed from touring by taking in the country on foot: “I saw so much beautiful American stuff—the bewitching buildings of New Orleans, a crazy Halloween in Boston. If I wasn't playing a gig or flying somewhere, I was just walking; constantly lost, constantly overwhelmed by the beauty of what I was seeing." She also chilled out to a carefully compiled playlist—check out the soundtrack here.
